5 Frame and Enclosure
5.1 General
5.1.1 Garage equipment shall be formed and assembled so that it has the strength and rigidity requiredto resist the abuses to which it may be subjected without resulting in a risk of fire, electric shock, or injurto persons due to total or partial collapse with resulting reduction of spacings, loosening or displacementof parts. or other defects.
5.1.1 revised December 26,1997
5.1.2 The enclosure of all equipment shall prevent molten metal, burning insulation, flaming particles, orsimilar materials from falling on combustible materials, including the surface upon which the equipment issupported.
5.1.2 revised June 30,2000
5.1.3 For compliance with 5.1.2 a barrier or pan of noncombustible material shall be provided:
a) Under a motor unless:
1) The structural parts of the motor or of the equipment provide the equivalent of sucha barrier;
2) The protection provided with the motor is such that no burning insulation or moltenmaterial falls to the surface that supports the equipment when the motor is enerqizedunder each of the following fault conditions:
i) Open main winding;
ii) Open auxiliary windings;
iii) Starting switch short-circuited; and
iv) Capacitor of a permanent-split-capacitor motor short-circuited – the shortcircuit is to be applied before the motor is energized, and the rotor is to belocked:
