0Definitions
3.1Liquid Fuel Tank-A fuel tank containing a fuel that is liquid at normal atmospheric pressure andtemperatures.
3.2Side-Mounted Fuel Tank-A fuel tank located in such a manner that any part extends outside of the vehicleframe rails when looking at the vehicle from a plan (top) view. For purposes of this definition, the fill spout is tobe ignored.
3.3Non Side-Mounted Fuel Tank–A fuel tank which is located totally within the confines of the vehicle framerails and behind the vehicle’s front axle when looking at the vehicle from a plan (top) view. For purposes of thisdefinition, the fill spout is to be ignored.
Adapters–Permanent nonremovable devices or means, affixed to the fuel tank for the attachment of fittings3.4
35Fittings-Removable devices affixed to the adapters in the fuel tank, with the exception of the fuel cap, whichis not considered a fitting.
Family Concept–Once the largest capacity of a fuel tank has been successfully tested, all smaller capacity3.6fuel tanks having similar characteristics such as cross section, material specifications, joining and/or weldingand assembly processes are assumed to be capable of meeting the same requirements of this document.
Requirements_All Fue/ Systems
Application of This Section–This section applies to systems for containing and supplying fuel for theoperation of motor vehicles or for the operation of auxiliary equipment installed on, or used in connection with.commercial motor vehicles.
LocationEach fuel system must be located on the motor vehicle so that:4.2No part of the system extends beyond the widest part of the vehicle;4.2.1
4.2.2No part of a fuel tank is forward of the front axle of a power unit;
4.2.3Fuel spilled vertically from a fuel tank while it is being filled will not contact any part of the exhaust orelectrical systems of the vehicle, except the fuel level indicator assembly;
4.2.4Fill pipe openings are located outside the vehicle’s passenger compartment and its cargo compartment;
4.2.5A fuel line does not extend between a towed vehicle and the vehicle that is towing it while the combination ofvehicles is in motion;
4.2.6No part of the fuel system is located within or above the passenger compartment.
Fuel Tank Installation–Each fuel tank must be securely attached to the motor vehicle.4.3
Gravity or Siphon Feed Prohibited–A fuel system must not supply fuel by gravity or siphon feed directly to4.4the carburetor or injector.
45Selection Control Valve Location-lf a fuel system includes a selection control valve which is operable bythe driver to reaulate the flow of fuel from two or more fuel tanks, the valve must be installed so that either:
4.5,1The driver may operate it while watching the roadway and without leaving his driving position; or
4.5.2The driver must stop the vehicle and leave his seat in order to operate the valve.
4.6Fuel Lines–Any portion of a fuel line which extends more than 50 mm (2 in) below the fuel tank or its sumpshall be enclosed in a protective housing. Diesel fuel cross-over, return, and withdrawal lines which extendbelow the bottom of the tank or sump must be protected to minimize damage from impact. Every fuel line mustbe:
