Definitions
3.1Backup Lamp-A lighting device used to provide illumination behind the vehicle and to provide a warningsignal to pedestrians and other drivers when the vehicle is backing up or is about to back up.
3.2 Point of Visibility–Any point on the lens surface which is within an area bounded by the intersection of theens surface with a 25 mm diameter cylinder, the centerline of which passes through the light source centerand is oriented horizontally and parallel with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
Lighting ldentification Code-Backup Lamps may be identified by the code “R” in accordance with SAEJ759.
5. Tests
5.1 SAE J575 is a part of this report. The following tests are applicable with modifications as indicated:
5.1 .1 V IBRATION T EST
5.1 .2 M OISTURE T EST
5.1 .3 D UST T EST
5.1 .4 C ORROSION T EST
5.1 .5 P HOTOMETRIC T EST
5.1.5.1 Photometric tests shall be made with the photometer at a distance of at least 3 m from the lamp. The H-V Axis shall be taken as the horizontal line through the light source and parallel with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle.
5.1.5.2 Photometric measurements shall be made with the bulb filament steadily burning.
5.1 .6 W ARPAGE T EST O N D EVICES W ITH P LASTIC C OMPONENTS
5.2 Color Test—SAE J578 is part of this report.
5.3 Materials Test—SAE J576 is part of this report.
6. Requirements
6.1 Performance Requirements—A device when tested in accordance with the test procedures specified in Section 5 shall meet the following requirements:
6.1 .1 V IBRATION —SAE J575
6.1 .2 M OISTURE —SAE J575
6.1 .3 D UST —SAE J575
6.1 .4 C ORROSION —SAE J575
6.1 .5 P HOTOMETRY —SAE J575
6.1.5.1 A single lamp, when used in a two-lamp system, shall be designed to conform to the zone total photometric requirements of Table 1 and its footnotes. The summation of the luminous intensity measurements at the test points in a zone shall be at least the value shown. When two lamps of the same or symmetrically opposite design are used, the photometric readings along the vertical axis and the average of the readings for the same angles left and right of vertical for one lamp may be used to determine compliance with the requirements of Table 1 . If two lamps of differing designs are used, they shall be tested individually, and the photometric values added to determine that the combined units meet twice the zone total candela requirements of Table 1 .
