Scope
This SAE Recommended Practice applies to engine coolant concentrate, propylene glycol base, for use inautomotive and light truck engine cooling systems.
This document applies to engine coolant concentrates for aluminum compatible requirements. Please refer toSAE J1941 and J2307 DRAFT for coolants used in heavy-duty diesel engine cooling systems.
For further information on engine coolants, see SAE J814 and J1034.

3Terminology
3.1Life Expectancy– The time period for which the engine coolant is suitable for use in internal-combustionengine cooling systems without adversely affecting coolant flow and heat transfer.
3.2Engine Coolant Concentrate- A mixture of propylene glycol and additives, such as corrosion inhibitors and aoam suppressor, which is used to prepare an engine coolant for use in internal-combustion engine coolingsystems.
3.3Engine Coolant– A heat transfer solution used in an engine cooling system to transfer heat from the engine tothe radiator, which provides adequate protection against freezing, boiling, and corrosion. The solution iscomprised of 40 to 70% coolant concentrate and water.
