SCOPE AND FIELD OF APPLICATION
This International Standard gives definitions of terms used to describe living ovine animals intended for slaughter.
TERMS AND DEFINITIONS
1 Iamb: An ovine animal, presented for slaughter, of which none of the permanent incisor teeth has erupted (See figure ii
1.1 sucking lamb: A Iamb which has not been weaned, and weighing not more than 15 kg.
1.2 slaughter Iamb: A Iamb weighing more than 15kg.
NOTE — Traditionally, despite the lack of precise criteria applicable to the living animal, slaughter lambs ire subdivided into milk-fed lambs or unweaned lambs, and grass-fed limbs (grazers’) or lambs fattened after weaning. The term ‘grass-fed lamb” should be qualified by the term “castrated’ or “entire”, if appropriate.
2 young ovine: A castrated or entire male ovine animal, or a female ovine animal which has not yet lambed, presented for slaughter and having at most two pairs of permanent incisor teeth. (See figure 2.)
NOTE — In this category the following e distinguished : young ewe,, young ram, and castrated male young ovine (young wettier).
3 adult ovine: A castrated or entire male ovine animal, or
a female Ovine animal, presented for slaughter, of which at
least one of the teeth of the third pair of permanent
incisors has erupted, or a female ovine which has lambed.
3.1 ram: An entire male adult ovine or a male adult ovine castrated after puberty.
3.2 ewe: A female adult ovine which has lambed.
3.3 maiden ewe: A female adult ovine which has not
lambed and is not showing any visible signs of pregnancy.
