IEEE 404-2012 pdf download IEEE Standard for Extruded and Laminated Dielectric Shielded Cable Joints Rated 2.5 kV to 500 kV
3.1 Cable joint categories
Cable joints are generally described by one of the categories that follow. These descriptive categoriesare provided only for convenience. They are not intended to cover all possible joint constructionsSome joint constructions may incorporate characteristics of two or more of the design categorieslisted.
extruded: A joint in which both cables are insulated with extruded dielectric materials rated 2.5 kVto 500 kV.
laminated: A joint in which both cables have a dielectric that consists of fluid-impregnated paper orpaper/synthetic laminated tape or varnished cloth.
transition: A joint that connects an extruded dielectric cable to a laminated dielectric cable.
32 Joint constructions
field vulcanized: A joint constructed in the field using externally applied heat and pressure tocross-link the joint polymeric materials dieleetrie
filled: A joint consisting of an outer shell that is flled with an insulating material to occupy thespace around the individual insulated conductor(s).
heat-shrink: A joint provided to the end user as eongnfng ef one or more expanded polymericcomponents extruded tubes er-melded parls that undergo thermally activated recovery whenheated to an appropriate temperature Production electrical testing cannot be performed on thistype of ioint because the stress control, insu lation, and shield lavers are not inteerated during themolding or extrusion proces5
premolded: A joint that is factory molded in the shape that it will take when installed. Installation isperformed by sliding thejoint over a prepared cable. The use of heat is not a part of the installationprocedure. Production electrical testing can be performed on this type of ioint because the stresscontrol, insulation, and shield layers are integrated during the molding process.
single-component cold-shrink: A joint provided to the end user as an expanded single componentdevice exeluding the metallie .componento, that isapplied over a prepared cable and reduced in diameter without the use of heat a by removal ofsupporting core. Production electrical testing can be performed on this type of joint because thestress control, insulation, and shielding ayers are inteerated during the molding or extrusionprocess see ao multi component cold shrink
taped: A joint constructed in the field with the use of one or more tapes that are applied over thecable layers. Heat may or may not be applied as part of the installation procedure. Productionelectrical testing cannot be performed on this type of ioint
