1. Overview
This standard is made up of two clauses. Clause 1 provides the scope and purpose of this standard. Clause 2describes the patterns that are included in this standard.
This standard also contains two annexes. Annex A provides guidelines for use, and Annex B provides biblio-graphical references.
1.1 Scope
This standard applies to the image quality evaluation of continuous-tone and high-contrast black-and-whitedocument facsimile systems.
1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this standard is to provide a means for facsimile image quality assessment. Image sharpness,scan line pitch, character readability, page distortion, print density, and transmission error effects are amongthe parameters that can be evaluated.
2. Test chart description
This continuous tone test chart is printed on low gamma photographic material that preserves the completegray scale between paper white and black for continuous tone photographs. It can be used for testing bothfacsimile machines with gray-scale capability and those machines that are black-and-white only. The blackwhite threshold setting of the facsimile scanner can be set very accurately with this chart The overall size ofthe printed chart is 279 216 mm. The patterns that make up the chart are defined below. Refer to the corresponding numbers on the pattern arrangement shown in Figure 1.
2.1 Pattern 1-A continuous (stepless) density wedge
From black on the left to white on the right.
2.2 Pattern 2–A reverse of the continuous wedge above
White on the left.
2.3 Pattern 3-A 48-step density tablet
With three rows of 16 density steps from white to black. Steps are designed for equal perceptibility to a human observer. See Table 1 for step density values.
2.4 Pattern 4-A set of 16 horizontal gray scale strips
From black to white. See Table 2 for strip density values.
