IEEE 1413-1999 pdf download IEEE Standard Methodology for Reliability Prediction and Assessment for Electronic Systems and Equipment
1.Overview
The usefulness of a reliability prediction is based on how the prediction is developed and how well theprediction is prepared,interpreted, and applied. Both the customer and the supplier should realize that theaccuracy of the reliability prediction is affected by the accuracy and completeness of the informationprovided to perform the prediction and the methods used to conduct the prediction.
1.1 Scope
This standard covers the framework for the reliability prediction process for electronic systems and equipment, including hardware and software predictions at all levels.
1.2 Objective
The objective of this standard is to identify required elements for an understandable, credible reliabilityprediction, which will provide the users of the prediction sufficient information to evaluate the effective useof the prediction results. A reliability prediction according to this standard shall have sufficient informationconcerning inputs, assumptions, and uncertainty, such that the risk associated with using the predictionresults would be understood.
1.3 Uses of a reliability prediction
Reliability predictions are used for numerous purposes, including the following:
Comparisons of designs and products;
Method to identify potential reliability improvement opportunities;
Logistics support;
Forecast warranty and life cycle costs:
Spare parts provisioning;
2. References
This standard shall be used in conjunction with the following publication.
IEEE Std 100-1996, IEEE Standard Dictionary of Electrical and Electronics Terms.
3. Denitions
Terms used in this standard can be found in IEEE Std 100-1996.
3.1 reliability (general).
The ability of an item to perform a required function under stated conditions for a stated period of time.
3.2 reliability, predicted.
For the stated conditions of use, and taking into account the design of an item, the reliability computed from the observed, assessed, or extrapolated reliabilities of its parts.
4. Elements of the reliability prediction
The requirements for the reliability prediction; the level of detail required; and the function of the product, the user, and the operating and environmental conditions shall be specied in the prediction document. The ocumentation of the reliability prediction shall provide the following:
a) Identication and description of the item for which a prediction is made;
b) Intended use of prediction results;
c) Identication of method(s) used;
d) List of inputs required for selected method(s);
1) The extent to which each input is known;
2) Source of known input data;
3) Assumptions for unknown input data;
e) Prediction result;
1) Figures of merit;
2) Conclusions and recommendations;
f) Condence in prediction;
1) Sources of uncertainty;
2) Limitations;
3) Repeatability.
The following clauses provide additional information on these required elements of a reliability prediction.
