1. Overview
1.1 Scope
This guide provides an overview of the basic concepts and intent of ABBET. Specifics of the standards andthe implementation of ABBET are found in other IEEE ABBET standards and guides.
1.2 Purpose
The purpose of this guide is to facilitate an understanding of the relationships of IEEE ABBET Std 1226and its component standards; as well as the relationship of an ABBET implementation with the designproduction, support,and operational environments with which it may be used.
1.3 Application
This guide provides a rapid orientation to ABBET for those who have not become failiar with the otherABBET specifications. It provides a point of entry and a context for ABBET newcomers.

This guide relates to IEEE ABBET documents only and provides overview and orientation for thefollowing documents:
2.Why ABBET?
The primary purpose of ABBET is to specify standard information interfaces applicable to test. Thescinterfaces facilitate a broad-ased interrelationship of test-related standards and services, and encompass thetotal product life cycle. Defining the interrelationships of these test-related standards, in turn, enablesimproved definition and control of the test process and allows test-related information in every phase of theproduct life cycle (design, manufacture, support) to become more accessible, In addition, the lEEEABBET standards provide a basis for users to define their test information needs across the product lifecycle.
11 Statement of the problem
The life cycle of any product consists of three major phases: designing the product manufacturing andquality testing of the product, and supporting the product for the end user (see figure 1). Traditionallyproduct design, manufacturing, and support have been considered separately, because they have been carriedout by diflerent elements of an organization. or by dificrent organizations entirely. Besides design data. thetools used at these different stages are often produced by different vendors, and are rarely compatible witheach other. These factors create obstacles to information sharing. Consequently, very little of the informa-tion generated during each phase is carried forward and used by the next phase
