EN 1176-5-2008 pdf download.Playground equipment and surfacing – Part 5: Additional specific safety requirements and test methods for carousels.
5.2.6 Rotating platform over 110 mm without skirt
For rotating platforms over 110 mm the underside of the carousel platform shall be a continuous smooth surface. The distance between the smooth surface and the ground shall either be constant (Figure 8b)) cx decrease in a radial line from the perimeter to the axis (Figure 8c)).
5.3 Carousel type C (spinning mushrooms, hanging glides)
5.3.1 General
Suspended user stations shall be of equal height. Suspended members for mobile suspended user stations shall be flexible.
NOTE This can be achieved by the use of ropes or chalns
If the hand supports are rigid and discontinuous, the minimum free height under them should be 1 800 mm.
There shall not be any rigid discontinuous parts below that level.
5.3.2 Structural integrity
When tested in accordance with EN 1176-2:2008, Annex C, the components shall show no cracks, permanent deformation or damage and no connection shall be loosened. There shall be no change in the components that can be seen with normal/corrected vision.
5.3.3 Suspended user station impact requirements
Suspended user stations mounted less than 2 m above the installation surface, when tested dismounted from the carousel in accordance with EN 1176-2:2008, Annex B, shall show no peak values of acceleration greater than 50 g and the average surface compression shall not exceed 90 N/cm².
5.3.4 Free space/Falling space
For type C carousels that Include a suspended user station, the free space and falling space shall be measured from the position where they are angled out by 30 from the vertical.
In addition to the free space and the falling space, there shall be an additional area extending at least 1 000 mm free from obstacles.
5.4 Carousel type D (track-driven carousels)
5.4.1 Drives
Crank or pedal drives shall be designed to be rotated by the users hands or feet. Crank or pedal drives shall be fitted with free-wheel devices.
If the driving power is transmitted to drive wheels by chains, toothed wheel, cardan shafts or similar then drive parts shall be covered on all sides to prevent Interference.
The openings in these covers shall be less than 5 mm, when measured in one direction.
The distance between crank arms and covers and/or other fixed structural components shall be at least 12 mm and there shall be no shear points.
All the edges of protective covers, cranks, pedals and other parts to which the user has access shall be free from burrs and have a radius of at least 3 mm.
Covers shall be connected to the equipment parts in such a way that they cannot come undone accidentally and can only be removed by use of a tool.
5.4.2 DrIve wheels
Dflve wheels that move the track-driven carousels round the track by means of muscle power shall be covered to prevent interference with them while the equipment is in operation.
5.4.3 Components of the supporting structure
Supporting structure components to which user stations are directly attached and which have drive elements fitted to them shall be mounted on the rotating shaft.
When tested in accordance with Annex A, other than for tracks where the drive wheels are positively driven, components of the supporting structure shall not lift by more than 100 mm.
5.4.4 Tracks
Track-driven carousels, other than where dnve wheels are positively driven, shall be designed so that the upper edges of the tracks are flush with the installation surfaces. If the tracks are undulating the installation surfaces shall be appropnately shaped.
Equipment where the dnve wheels are positively driven shall be designed to prevent access between the drive wheel and track. The maximum distance shall not exceed 8 mm.
5.5 Carousel type E (giant revolving disks)
5.5.1 General
Giant revolving disks shall be circular and constructed centrically (i.e. rotating around their central fixing point).
NOTE 1 This is to prevent the user from being hit by the equipment as a result of the change in the honzontal dimension of the space occupied by the rotahng pLatforni
NOTE 2 The inclinahon of the platform results in large forces. The bearing of the support and the construction of the foundations should withstand these forces.
5.5.2 Upper side
The upper side of a giant revolving disk shall be a continuous surface, free of obstacles and smooth, NOTE The upper surface does not have to be even as long as it is free from burrs, the edges and changes of profile are rounded and no trip hazards are fomied
Handles or grips shall not be provided.EN 1176-5-2008 pdf download.
