3 Principle
The workable life of a sample of fresh mor1ar initially brought to a defined flow value, Is measured by the time in minutes at which it reaches a defined limit of stiffness or workability during a defined type test.

5 Sampling, preparation and storage of test samples
The fresh mortar for this test shall have a minmmin volume of 1,5 I or at least 1,5 times the (luantity needed to IwIfonri the test, whichever Is the greater, and shall be obtained eitlwr by reduction of the bulk test sample (see EN 1015-2) using a suupIe di’ider or by quartering or by prepandion frum (try conslituents and waler in the laboratory. Tin’ flow value of the mortar lii 11w bulk test sample shall be detemiined in accordance with EN 1015.) and rPpOIlt(L
Laboratory mixed samples shall, before testing, be bmught to a defined flow value as specified In
EN 1015-2.
Ready to use mortars (factory-made wet mortars which an’ n’tanled), and pn’-batdwd air-linwIsand wet mortars when not gauged with hydraulic bInders shall be tested within (heir specified workable life.
6 Method A — Workable life of general purpose mortar
6.1 General
The workable life of (lie fresh mortar is measured by the time In minutes at which It reaches a defined limit of resistance to jwnctrallon of a standant rod forced into it.
6.2 Procedure
Fill sulYieietit mouhis with test mortar and any control mix to provde adequate ansi of surface for the required number or pefletratloas of the rod. Fill each inouhi in about 10 increments, iimwuizing eXcess mortar to be stnwk oft’ and tapping the mould on the bench four times after each increment. Strike oil the surface plant’ and level with tlw (up of the mould using a palette knife.
Store the filled moulds in air at a temperature of 20 °C ±2°C and a relative humidity of Hot less than
05 96, e.g. in a sealed polyethylene bag.
Place a mould on the scale under the penetration rod so that the portion of the sample sitiface immediately beneath the rod is at least 20 nun Imni tiw rim of the mould or from the position of any previous
A(ljust the tare (tevice or rteonl the mass of 11w filled mould. By means of the lever on the drill stand, lower the penetration rod slowly into the sample until the loose washer just toUdws the surface (see Figure 1).
Note the reading of the scale in kilograms. Correct this reading, If n vssauy, for the mass of the ruled mould, and themi (livide it by 3 to express 11w resIstance to penetration in N/mm2.
For a nun-retarded mortar measure the resistance to penetration at intervals of 15 nun, starting at :10 mm before (1W declared workable life, until it exceeds the presenhed lunit of resistance (see 6.3).
For retarded mortani, cheek the peiwuation intermittently, at convenient tinws, until the resistance starts to increase, (lien ired as described above.
6.3 Calculatloim and expression of results. Measure the workable life front the completion of either the addition of water to 11w dmy constituents.EN 1015-9-1999 pdf download.
