BS EN 16758:2021 pdf download.Curtain walling — Determination of the strength of shear connections — Test method and requirements.
This document specifies test methods for the determination of bearing capacity (ultimate limit state and serviceability limit state), of connections between curtain walling framing members which cannot be calculated in accordance with current codes or conventional calculations based upon the strength of the materials.
Mechanical performances of the curtain walling connections are already assessed in accordance with the provisions described in EN 13830. Additional information with respect to mechanical performance of the connections and direct applications can be determined with this document (see Annex C).

5 Method of evaluation
5.1 General
In practice, connections are subjected to permanent loads as well as to variable loads. The measurement of the deformation is recorded at the application of the force unless indicated on the figures with the position of the displacement transducers (DT). The clamping shall restraint vertical and horizontal movements. When using an infill panel to apply the forces:
— care shall be taken to avoid friction between the mull panel and the mullion(s);
— no vertical setting block should be used between the infill and the mullion(s);
— the infill should be rigid enough to avoid buckling;
— the frame of the test bench shall be rigid enough not to introduce inaccuracies when recording the deformation;
— the measurement accuracy should he ±0,1 mm.
5.2 Samples
The samples shall be representative of the connection methods between the framing members of the curtain walling.
Based on the type of curtain walling (e.g. stick construction, unitized system), different types of connection between the framing members should be tested, depending upon the design of the connection. Figures 1 to 3 are examples of typical test configurations, but different configurations may be used. The sample restraints “S” given in Figures 1 to 3 are given as an indication. They should be designed in such way that recorded data during the tests are limited to the behaviour of the connection. Figures 4 to 7 are examples of typical test configurations incorporating glass supports.
5.3 Loadings
5.3.1 Preloading
Prior to loading, a force of 100 N is applied, after which the displacement (DT) is reset.
5.3.2 Vertical loading
The load application device is designed in such a way that all the F forces shown in Figure 1 to Figure 9 are the same at ±5 %. The design static loading is specified as follows:
— minimum n = 5 connections are submitted to vertical loading until they break using a deformation speed of 2 to 5 mm/mm, the force/deformation curve is recorded;
— the design vertical load at ULS is determined according the procedure described in Annex B.
5.3.3 Horizontal loading
5.3.3.1 General
The load application device is designed in such a way that all the F forces shown in Figure 1 to Figure 9 are the same at ±5 %.
Fh should be located on the transom as close as possible to the mullion which should not be more than ch 50 mm. Depending on the actual geometry of the connection and difficulties in applying the different forces, one practical solution to have the same scheme of forces, is to apply a unique 2xFh force in the middle of the span of the transom(s), (1)12, see Figure 9).
5.3.3.2 PositIve (pressure) loading
It is specified as follows:
— minimum n = S connections are submitted to horizontal positive loadings until they break, using a deformation speed 01(2 to 5) mm/mm, the force/deformation curves are recorded;
— the design positive horizontal load Fhdes, at ULS is determined according the procedure described in Annex B.BS EN 16758 pdf free download.
