The test water shjll be chlorine free water with a conductivity of < 2mS/mp and a total organic content (TOC) of < 0,2 iug/l C, e.g. prepared by reverse osmosis, deionization or (listillation, followed by activated carbon filtration.
5.2 Cleaning liquids for glassware
5.2.1 hydrochloric acid, concentrated (30 % mass per volume) analytical reagent grade.
5.2.2 hydrochloric acid solution, prepared by slowly adding (0,5 ± 0,01) I of concentrated hydrochloric acid (iLl) to (0,5 ± 0,01)11)1 test water jl).
N0TI Carc is needed because the solution may generate heat,
5.2.3 nitric acid, concentrated (65 % mass per volume) analytical reagent grade.
5.2.4 nitric acid solution, prepared by slowly adding (0,5 ± 0.01)1 of concentrated nitric acid (5.2.3) to (0,5 ± 0,0l)l of test water’ (ii).
N0TI Care is needed because the solution may generate heat.
6 Apparatus
6.1 Vessels, containers, stoppers and connections, consisting ola material, such as glass, PTFE or stainless steel, that is inert under the specified test conditions (see C1auc..9).
The material I’TFE should only be used when there is a small contact area with the test water. Thus PTFF is uiisuitable for containers.
It is recommended to have dedicated equipment.
N0I’I It is .idvised not to use glass stoppers with grease.
6.2 Test apparatus. Specifications see Annex R. For any column used, the ratio olbi’d height (h) to bed diameter (d) shall be S ± 0.3 (hId = S ± 0,3).
6.3 Teniperature control facility, such as a temperature-controlled laboratory, capable of maintaining the test appamItus at (23 ± 2) °C.
6.4 Laboratory glassware, cleaned by wash i rig with a biodegradable laboratory detergent, followed by rinsing with either’ hydrochloric acid solution (5.22) or nitric acid solution (52.4) and tiiially by thoroughly rinsing with test water (5.1).
7 Test samples
A representative sample of the resin shall be taken and treated according to manufacturer’s instructions.
8 Pre-treatment of test samples
Rinsing or cycling (exhaustion/regeneration) of wet resins, if relevant, shall be carried out according to nianulacturer’s instructions (see Annex C).
Do not carry out any regeneration or cycling procedure in the test apparatus.
9 Test 1)rocedure
9.1 General
This test procedure comprises two diflereiit sampling modes: samplmg mode A and sampling mode H. Unless specified differently by national regulations sampling iiiode K is used.
NOTF I The actual number ol leachate samples to he taken. disintection requirements, their analysis and asscssnwnt will he specified in national or other regulations.
NOTF 2 Whether single or niultiple testing is to 1w carried out on a I)rodUct will be specilied in national or other regulations. The method aSSLIIiWS single testing.
9.2 Preparation of leachate sample
9.2.1 After any pre—treatnwnt if relevant measure the volume of test resin (see 9.2.4 or92.5). Introduce I ()Oml of test water into the column. Gradually add the resin, this shall remain submerged. Alter settling. vibrate the column to tamp down the resin to a constant volume by lateral tapping. Repent this operation, adding resin until the final volume (see 92.4 ori2_5) is obtained.
The resins should be added to the column as a slurry in test water in order to overcome problems of wetting a ml air cut ra ininent.
Connect the column to the test water vessel (sue Annex R) and Feed with (20 ±0.5) bed volumes of test water at a rate of (10 ±0,25) bed volumes per hour.
9.2.2 Leave to stand for 24 h in the absence of light with the test water level at least 30 mm above the top of the bed of resin to prevent air getting into the resin bed.
9.2.3 Start the flow of test water through the column at a rate of (5 ± 0.25) bed volumes per hour. Continue with 9.2.4 (sampling mode A) or 9.2.5 (sampling mode B).
This test procedure includes an optional disinfection stage. NOTE Typically volume at test resin is SO() ml (see Annex H).
9.25.1 Collect the first 3 bed volumes (water samples A1, A2 A1) and combine into water sample TA.
9.2.5.2 Leave to stand or 24 Ii in the absence of light with tlw test water level at least 30 mm above the top of the bed of resin.
9.2.5.3 Start the flow of test water through the column at a rate of (5 ± 0.25) bed volumes per hoLil:
Collect the first 3 bed volumes (water samples B . B2 B) and conthiiw into water sample T11.
9.2.5.4 Leave to stand For 24 hi in the absence of light with the test water level at least 30 mm above the to;) of the bed of resin.
9.2.5.5 Start the flow of test water through the column at a rate of (S ± 0.25) bed volumes i’r hour. Collect 11w tirst 3 bed volumes (water samples C1, C2, C-i) amid combiiw into waler sample T. Analyse the samples TA, T1, T1 according to 9A and calculate the test results according to 1112.
9.2.5.6 II disinfection is required by the nianu1acturei disinfect the resin following the manufacturer instrUctions.
9.2.5.7 Leave to stand for 24 Ii in the absence of light with the test water at least 30 mm above the top of the resin bed.
9.2.5.8 Start the flow of test water through the column at a rate of (5+ (1 75) hid ‘nlnmas pilr hniir Analyse the samples TA, TH. T( according to .4 and calculate the Lest results according tol(L2.
9.3 Procedural blanks
Before starting the resin test generate blank samples. Add test water (1 1W) to the Lest apparatus. Connect the column to tiw test water vessel and Iced with (20 ±0,5) bed volumes of test water at a rate of (10 ±0.25) bed volumes per hour. Leave to stand for 24 Ii in the absence of light. Start the flow of test water t hi rough t 1w col ri muii at a rate of (5 ± 0,25) bed olu mes per hou m:
For sampling mode A collect the first 5 bed volumes individually (blank samples X1, X2, X:& X1, Xc). Determine the concentration of analyte x1, x2, X3, x4, x in blank samples X1, X2, X3, X4, X5.
For sampling mode B collect the first 3 bed volumes and combine into blank sample X’. Determine the concentration of analyte x in blank sample XT.BS/EN 12873-3-2019 pdf download.
