ASTM D4310-20,Standard Test Method for Determination of Sludging and Corrosion Tendencies of Inhibited Mineral Oils.
ASTM D4310-20 is a modification of Test Method D943 where the oxidation stability of the same kinds of oils is determined by following the acid number of oil.
An oil sample is contacted with oxygen in the presence of water and an iron-copper catalyst at 95C for 1000 h. The weight of insoluble material is determined by vacuum filtration of the oxidation tube contents through 5 um pore size filter disks. The total amount of copper in the oil, water, and sludg phases is also determined for Procedure A. Procedure B requires the sludge determination. The copper determination is not required. The acid number determination is optional for both procedures.
Reproducibility–The difference between two single and independent results, obtained by different operators working in different laboratories on identical test material, would, in the long run and in the normal and current operation of the test method, exceed the following values only I case in 20.
