1.1 The present fire-resistance response standard delineates a methodology for determining the minimum oxygen concentration, expressed as a percentage by volume, necessary to sustain a flame in a flowing blend of oxygen and nitrogen.

1.2 The current testing technique encompasses three distinct procedures. Procedure A entails ignition at the surface, Procedure B pertains to the spread of ignition, and Procedure C is a streamlined method that involves a comparison against a predetermined minimum oxygen index value.

1.3 The test samples employed in this testing protocol are crafted into one of six specified sample types, as detailed in Table 1.

1.4 The testing protocol is designed to evaluate materials capable of self-supporting their structure in the form of upright bars or sheets with a maximum thickness of 10.5 millimeters. These materials are classified as solid, composite, or cellular, with an apparent density exceeding 15 kilograms per cubic meter.

1.5 Additionally, the protocol accommodates the testing of flexible sheets or films that are supported in a vertical orientation.

1.6 In certain instances, the protocol is also applicable to cellular materials with an apparent density below 15 kilograms per cubic meter.

Note 1: While this testing method has been identified as suitable for assessing certain additional materials, the accuracy of the method has not been established for these materials, nor for sample geometries or testing conditions that deviate from those recommended within this document.

1.7 The testing method quantifies and characterizes how materials, products, or assemblies react to heat and flame under controlled conditions; however, it does not inherently encompass all the elements necessary for conducting a comprehensive fire hazard or risk assessment of these materials, products, or assemblies in real-world fire scenarios.
