1.1 This test method outlines the process for separating and determining representative fractions of aromatics and non-aromatics from hydrocarbon mixtures that have boiling points ranging from 232 °C to 538 °C (450 °F to 1000 °F). Alternative procedures are available for separating either 2 g or 10 g of the hydrocarbon mixture.

NOTE 1: Certain components may not be eluted from the chromatographic column for certain sample types under the conditions specified in this method.

NOTE 2: Test Method D2007 serves as an alternative approach for separating high-boiling oils into polar compounds, aromatics, and saturates fractions.

1.2 An alternative procedure is available for handling samples that boil below 232 °C (450 °F) but have a 5% point above 178 °C (350 °F), as determined by Test Method D2887. Details of this procedure can be found in Appendix X1.
