ASTM B766-23 pdf free download – Standard Specification For Electrodeposited Coatings Of Cadmium.
This standard outlines the criteria for cadmium coatings applied via electrodeposition to iron, steel, and various other metallic products.
Note 1—Electrodeposition of cadmium is primarily employed for coatings on iron and steel items. However, it is also feasible for aluminum, brass, beryllium copper, copper, nickel, and parts made through powder metallurgy.
The coatings are available in a range of thicknesses up to and including 25 micrometers, and can be applied as electrodeposited coatings or with additional finishes.
Cadmium coatings are utilized to enhance the corrosion resistance and prevent corrosion on the base metal components. The undiluted coating (Type I) is particularly effective for cost-effective protection in environments that are mild or non-corrosive, where the early formation of white corrosion products does not impair the functionality of the component. The primary role of the supplementary chromate finishes (Types II and III) on the electrodeposited cadmium is to further improve the corrosion resistance. Chromating helps to slow down or inhibit the development of white corrosion products on surfaces subjected to diverse environmental conditions and delays the onset of corrosion from the base metal.
