2 SCOPE
This Uniform Voluntary Standard applics to all lum-ber-deck pallets, cither new or repaired, as well as thelumber components and fasteners, Criteria contained inthis Standard arc applicable only at the completion ofmanufacture. This Standard does nof cover panel-deckpallets.
This Standard is in three parts. Part I is the Prescriptive Standard which concerns the manufacture of thepallet. This includes pallet and pallet component de-scriptions,fastener descriptions, workmanship criteriadimensional tolerances, markings, and moisture contentlevels. Part II is the Performance Standard which con-cerns fhe functionality of the pallet. This confains ref.erences to the testing of physical and computer modelsto assist manufacturers, distributors, and users to determine the performance level of a specified pallet. Use ofthe Performance Standard is required for new pallet constructions, along with conformance to Part I of the Prescriptive Standard. Part IIl covers the Quality AssuranceAuditing Program.
This Standard does not describe established speciarequirements for export pallets, Enhanced Wood pallets, and phytosanitary pallcts, and docs not addrcss thcsafety problcms, if any, associatcd with thc usc of woodpallets. It is the responsibility of the user of this Standardto cstablish appropriate safety and health practices anddeterminc thc applicability of regulatory limitations priorto its use.

3 CLASSIFICATIONS
3,1 Ciasses
(a) Class i. Stringer pallet (see Fig. 1)(b) Class 2. Block pallet (see Fig. 1).

(a) Category I: Multiple Use (M) – pallet designedfor repeated uses for more than one unit load with anaverage minimum “life-to-first-repair”” (LFR) of tentrips, or morc,assuming an avcragc of fve handlings pertrip and an average handling environment as defined inthe Pallet Design System (PDS) (scc Soction 10.2); alsoknown as a returnable pallet, reusabie pallet, permanentpallet,general-purpose pallet,special-purpose pallet.speciai-service pallei, or ihrough-iransii paiiei.(b) Category 2: Limited-Use (L) — allet designedfor an average of up to nine trips, with an average ofive handiings per trip and an average handiing environment as defined in the Pallet Design System (PDS), before first repair, i.e., life to first repair (LFR) (see Sections 4, 9, and 10.2); also known as a single-trip palletone-trip pallet, one-way pallet, expendable pallet, shipping pallet, or general-service pallet
3.3 Types
Type 1. Two-way entry pallet with openings acceptinghandling equipment only in two pallet ends, i.e., unnotched stringer pallet.
Type 2. Partial four-way entry pallct with openings atboth cnds and sidcs with limiting acccssibility of thcopenings to common handling equipment,i.c., notchedstringer pallet and block pallet with overlapping bottomstringerboards and bottom deckboards.
Type 3. Full four-way entry pallet with opcnings atboth ends and sides with accessibility of all openingsnot limited to standard handling equipment, i.e., biockpallets with perimeter boards,unidirectional,or withoutboitom deckboards.
