1 SCOPE
This Standard establishes dimensions for LPG fuelcylinders used on powered industrial trucks.
2 PURPOSE
The purpose of this Standard is to promote theinterchangeability of 20#33.5#and 43.5# LP-Gascylinders used on powered industrial trucks.
3 INTERPRETATION
3.1 Mandatory and Advisory Rules
To carry out the provisions of this Standard, allitems are mandatory except those including the wordshould, which are recommendations.
3.2 Requests for Interpretation
The B56 Committee will render an interpretation ofany requirement of this Standard. The interpretationswill be rendered only in response to a written rcqucstsent to the Secretary of the B56 Committee,ASME.Three Park Avenue,New York,NY 10016-5990.Therequest for interpretation shall be in the followingformat:
Cite the applicable paragraph number(s)and provide a concise description.Cite the applicable edition of the pertinentstandard for which the interpretation isbeing requested.Phrase the questions as a request for aninterpretation of a specific requirementsuitable for general understanding and usenot as a request for approval of a proprietary design or situation. The inquirer mayalso include any plans or drawings thatare necessary to explain the question!however, they should not contain proprietary names or information.
ASME procedures provide for reconsideration of anyinterpretation when or if additional information thatmight affect an interpretation is available. Further.persons aggrieved by an interpretation may appeal tothe cognizant ASME Committee or SubcommilleeASME does not“approve,”“certify,”“rate,” or “endorsc”any item,construction, proprietary devicc,oractivity.
4 DESIGN AND CONSTRUCTIONSTANDARDS
(a) LP-Gas fuel cylinders shall be constructed ofsteel or aluminum and shall conform to the appropriateASME,Department of Transportation (DOT),andTransport Canada (TC) Standards. DOT and TC cylin-ders shall have a minimum service pressure rating of240 psi (16 bar).
NOTE: Newly constructed cylinders used in Canada require ICmarkings. Cylinders manufactured to TC standards contain metricmarkings. Cylinders used in the ljnited States reguire DOT markingsSomne cylinders are manufactured and dual marked to allow fillingand use in hoth countrics (c.g.DOT-4BA240 – TC4BAM16).
(b) LPG fuel cylinders shall be constructed to engagea substantial positioning pin or an equivalent mean!to provide for intended positioning of the cylinder(See Fig. 1,G.)
(c) LPG fuel cylinders shall be filled (see Table 1)by weight only or by either weight or volume.(d) LPG fuel cylinders, which can be filled by eitherweight or volume, shall have a fxed liquid level gauge
5 MARKINGS
Cylinders shall be marked in accordance withNFPA 58.
