ASME B31.9:1996 pdf download BUILDING SERVICES PIPING ASME CODE FOR PRESSURE PIPING, B31 An AMERICAN NATIOnAL STANDARD
900 GENERAL
This Building Services Piping Code is a Scction otThe American Society of Mechanical Engineers Codcfor Pressure Piping,B31. This Section, herein calledthe Code, is published as a separate document forconvenience.
Standards and specifications incorporated by referencein this Code are shown in Table 926.1,Appendix Aand elsewhere. It is nof considered practical to referto a dated edition of each standard or specificationwhere referenced.Instead, the dated edition referencesare included in Appendix C.
The user is cautioned that the local huilding codemust be observed and adhered to when its requirementsare mmore stringent than those of this Code.
Components of piping systems shail conform to thespecifications and standards listed in this Code, Pipingelements neither specifically approved nor specificallyprohibited by this Code may be used provided theyare qualified for usc as sct forth in applicable chaptersof this Code.
Engineering requiremcnts of this Code, while considered necessary and adequate for safe design, gcnerallyemploy a simplifed approach. An engineer capablc otapplying a more rigorous analysis shall have the latitudcto do so. He must be able to demonstrate the validityof his approach
900.1 Scope
900.1.1 Coverage and Application. This Code Section has rules for the piping in industrial, institutional.commercial, and public buildings, and muiti-unit residences, which docs not rcquire the rangc of sizespressures, and temperatures covered in B31.1. ThisCode prescribes requirements for the dcsign, materials.fabrication, installation, inspection, examination, andtesting of piping systems for building services. It in-cludes piping systems in the building or within theproperty limits.
900.1.2 Services and Limits
(a) Services. This Code appiies to the foilowingbuilding services, except as excluded in para900.1.3:(1) water for heating and cooling
(2) condensing water(3) steam or other condensate
(4) other nontoxic iiquids
(5) stearn
(6) vacuum
(7) compressed air
(8) other nontoxic.nonflammable gases
(9) combustible liquids including fuel oil(b) Boiler External Piping. The scope of this Codeincludes boiler external piping within the followinglimits.
(i) for steamn boilers,1 psig max.(2) [or water heating units, 160 psig max. and250°F max.Boiler extemal piping above these pressure or temperature limits is within the scopc of ASME B31.1. Boilelcxtcmal piping is the piping connecied io iie boileand extending to thc points identified in Fig. 900.1.2B(c) Material and Size Limits. Piping systems of thefollowing matcrials arc within the scope of this Codcthrough the indicated maximum size (and wall thicknessif noted):
(1) carbon stecl: NPS 30 and 0.500 in, wall(2) stainless steel: NPS 12 and 0.500 in. wall(3) aluminum: NPS 12
(4) brass and copper: NPS 12 (12.125 in, O.Dfor copper tubing)(5) thermoplastics: NPS 14
(6) ductile iron: NPS 18
(7) reinforced thermosctting resin: 14 in.Other materials may bc used as noted in Chapter Ifl(d) Pressure Limits. Piping systems with workingpressures not in excess of the following limits arewithin the scope of this Code:
(1) steam and condensate: 150 psig
(2) liquids: 350 psig
(3) vacuum: 1 atm cxtcrmal pressure
(4) compresscd air and gas: 150 psig
