SECTION 1-0.1: SCOPE OF B30.1
Within the general scope defined in Section I of theIntroduction,B30.1 applies to general purpose, portablejacks of the following categories: hand- or power-operated hvdraulicjacks, mechanical ratchetjacks, and handor power-operated mechanical screw jacks.Tacks designed for automotive service,trip-loweredjacks, and those that are an integral part of other equipment are not included in the scope of this StandardDevices designed for static support rather than liftingare not included.

Figures 1 through 7, on the pages that follow, showtypical jacks covered by this Standard. They are notintended to be all inclusive.
SECTION 1-0.2: DEFINITIONS
appointed: assigned specific responsibilities by the em-ployer or the employer’s representative.
authorized service center: an independent service facilitydesignated by the manufacturer to repair and test jacksof their manufacture.
confrolled conditions: where the jack is evenly supportecon a solid foundation, operating a gravity load onlyprotected against wind and other external forces such asshockloads or vibrations, and at an ambient temperaturerange of -20°F to 140F (-29°C to 60°C)
confrol parts: parts which the operator must manipulatein extending or retracting the jack.
designated person: a person selected or assigned by theemployer or the employer’srepresentative as being competent to perform specific duties.
extender: a device that increases the jack’s closed lengthjack: a portable hand- or power-operated mechanismwith a base and load point designed for controlled linearmovement.
jack, double-acting hydraulic: a jack that is extended andretracted under hydraulic pressure.
jack, hydraulic: a jack using liquid to move the load
jack, mechanical: a jack using any means other than fluidto move the load.
load: the total superimposed weight or force to be over-come by the jack.
load point: the point of load application.
load point, auxiliary: any point of load application otherthan the load point.
load point, integral auxiliary: any nonremovable point ofload application other than the load point.
load rating, auxiliary: rated load of the jack, as determinedby the manufacturer, when load is applied at the auxiliary load point.
overload: any load greater than the rated load.
overtravel: movement beyond maximum travel for whichthe jack was designed.
power: any means other than manual of actuating a jack
qualified person: a person who, by possession of a recognized degree in an applicable field, or certificate of professional standing,or who, by extensive knowledgetraining, and experience, has successfully demonstratedthe ability to solve or resolve problems relating to thesubject matter and work.
rated load (hudraulic jacks): maximum load, applied at aspecified point, for which the jack is designed and builtoy a manufacturer for its specified travel.
rated load, lifting (mechanical jacks): maximum load, applied at a specified point, which the jack is designed tolift with the specified operating lever.
rated load, sustaining (mechanical jacks): maximum loadapplied at a specified point, which the jack was designedto sustain.
service. normal: the use of iacks to raise or lower knownaxial loads at or less than 85% rated capacity, undercontrolled conditions.
