1 GENERAL
1.1 Scope
This Standard provides safety requirements for thcdesign, construction, testing,and use of rivetingscaling and tinner’s setting hammers described belowThe names given are those generally recognized:styles are not limited to those named or illustrated (secFigs.1,2,and 3).
(a) Riveting harnmers: Intended specifically fordriving, spreading. and setting unhardened rivets inhardened materials (also called tinner’s or machinists’nveting hammmers).
(b) Scaling hammers. Intended specifically forremoving scale, paint, welding flux, rust or other similarflaking material from the surface of unhardened metal(also called chipping hammmers).
(c) Tinner’s serring hammers: Intended specificallyfor closing, forming, and peening of sheet metal (alsocalled peening harnmners).
1.2 Purpose
This Standard is intended to serve as a guide inselecting, testing,and using the hand tools covered. Detailsof design, testing, and use of the tools covered are specifiedonly as they relate to safety, It is not the purpose of thisStandard to specify the details of manufacturing.
The standard is also meant to serve as a guide indeveloping manuals and posters and for training personnelto work safely.
1.3 Application
This Standard may be used as a guide by state authoritiesor other rcgulatory bodies in the formulation of laws orregulations. It is also intended for voluntary use byestablishments that use or manufacture the tools coveredThe methods employed to ensure compliance with thisStandard shall be determined by the proper regulatory oradministrative authority.
1.4 Shall and Should
Mandatory requirements of this Standard are characterizedby the word “ghall” If a provision is ofan advisory naturcit is indicated by the word “should” or is stated as a recommendation.
1.5 Equivalent
The word “equivalent” in this Standard shall beinterpreted to mean alternative designs or features thatwill provide an equal degree of safety.

bevel: the angular portion on scaling and tinner’s settinghammers adjacent to the bit or peen edge.
bit: the portion of the scaling hammer at the extreme endof the bevel.
chamfer: the bevel or equivalent radius of riveting andtinner’s setting hammers encircling the perimeter of thestriking face; also refers to the bevels on the ends of thepeen faces, peen edges, or bits of hammners.
eye: an opening or aperture in the head into which thehandle is inscrted if the handle is separate.
handle: the portion that protrudes from the head and bywhich thc tool is held.
handle grip: material securely attached to the grip end ofsome styles of hammer handles.
