4DEFINITIONS
accuracy: the allowable inaccuracy, also known as permissible deviation, tolerance, or error band. A highervalue means a lower certainty of correctness.
rated capacity: the maximum intended torque the usershall measure or apply.
5 REQUIREMENTS
The illustration shown herein is descriptive and notrestrictive, and is not intended to preclude the manufacture of an electronic torque instrument that is otherwisein accordance with this Standard. Conformance withrequirements not verified by test shall be established byvisual examination.Coatings composition and charac-teristics shall be determined either by appropriate testsor reference to manufacturer’s specifications, drawingsor procurement documents.
5.1 Design
The torque instrument shall be capable of electroni-cally indicating the torque applied through the use of atransducer and digital display. The torque value readoutshall be visible at a viewing angle up to 45 deg fromnormal. It shall have an integral power supply capable otmeeting the requirements specified in para.5.11.Whentested in accordance with para. 6.2, the maximum allowable digital conversion time shall not exceed 100 msec(minimum of 10 times per second).
5.2 Finish
Exterior surfaces of the torque instrument shall besmoothly finished. Sharp edges and corners capable ofcausing injury shall be removed, and parts subject tocorrosion shall be appropriately protected. Minor blemishes shall be permitted, provided they do not detractsubstantially from the appearance or operation of thetorque instrument. Protection from environmental damage shall be provided by suitable coating or transparentcover.
5.3 Coatings
Coatings shall be tightly adherent, uniform in appearance, and free from conditions that would prevent fullcompliance with the requirements of this Standard. Theyshall protect the base metal from corrosion under useand storage conditions normally associated with handtools, and they shall not peel. crack, or blister in such useor storage. Minor blemishes shall be permitted, providedthey do not detract substantially from the appearanceor operation of the torque instrument, Cadmium platingshall not be used as a coating.
5.4 Drives
Drives shall conform to the requirements of ASMEB107.4M.
