1 SCOPE
This Standard is intended to cover the general dimen-sional and functional characteristics of adjustable jointand slip joint pliers.
Inclusion of dimensional and functional data in thisStandard is not intended to imply that all products de-scribed herein are stock production sizes. Consumers arerequested to consult with manufacturers concerning listsof stock production sizes.

The following types, classes, and styles of pliers arecovered in this Standard.

4 REQUIREMENTS
4.1 lllustrations
The illustrations shown herein are descriptive and notrestrictive,and are not intended to preclude the manufacture of pliers which are otherwise in accordance withthis Standard.
4.2 Materials
The materials used in the manufacture of the pliersshall be such as to produce pliers conforming to the physical requirements hereinafter specified.
4.3 Design
Pliers shall be similar to the figure to which referenceis made and shall be proportioned in all parts so as to bestrongdurable, and easy to operate.
4.4 Marking
Pliers shall be marked in a plain and permanent man-ner with the manufacturer’s name or with a trademark ofsuch known character that the source of manufacture andcountry of origin may be readily determined. The marking shall be as permanent as the pliers to which it is applied (providing the surface to which it was applied hasnot been subjected to a fretting or abrading action) andbe capable of withstanding the cleaning procedures nor-mally experienced during its intended use.
4.5 Finishes
4.5.1 Appearance. All surfaces shall be essentiallyfree from pits, nodules, burrs, cracks, and other defectswhich may adversely affect the appearance or performance of the pliers. Polished surfaces shall have a maximum surface roughness of 63 uin(1.6 m) with a supplementary rust preventive treatment (ref.ANSVASMEB46.1).
4.5.2 Protective/Decorative Coatings. Coatingsshall be adherent smooth, continuous, and free from pits.blisters, nodules, and any other defects which would interfere with their protective value and serviceability.
4.6 Handles
4.6.1 Characteristics.Handles of pliers shall be soshaped as to afford a comfortable grip and shall be freefrom rough edges and sharp corners. Inner handle sur-faces shall be well rounded or beveled so as to preventinjury to the hand. Outer hand gripping surfaces shall beeither smooth,impressed with a textured gripping sur-face, or furnished with comfort grips. Handles shall behardened to 35 to 60 HRc.
4.6.2 Comfort Grips. When comfort grips are fur-nished on pliers handles, they shall be made of a poly-mer of rubber, plastic, or other suitable material capableof withstanding long, hard usage without deterioration orrubbing off, and meet the solvent resistance test speci-fied in para. 5.4. The comfort grip shall remain perma-nently attached under normal use of the tool.The comfort grips on handles are not intended to giveany degree of protection against electric shock and shallnot be used on live electric circuits.
