1.4.1 Routine
(a) The floor surfaces adjacent to the landing platesmust be continuous with the top of the landing plate,with no abrupt changes in elevation of more than’/. in. (6.4 mm). Access to an egress from the escalatorshould be free of obstacles and tripping hazardsCheck that the pit covers are present and in goodcondition.
(b) For escalators installed under the A17.1a-1988and later editions and A17.3, a safety zone shouldbe maintained free of obstacles (see Fig.1.4.1). TheseCode dimensions are minimums and traffic patternsmay require larger distances.
(c) While standing on the unit, verify that thelanding and combplates provide a secure footholdand outdoor units should provide a secure footholdwhen wet.

Verify that vertical headroom clearance of 7 ft (2.13m) is provided and that the required safety zone ispresent.

ITEM 1.5LIGHTING
1.5.1 Routine
Check whether the lighting at the landing plate isadequate. Note any lamps that are not operating andtheir affect on the escalator lighting. For escalatorsinstalled under A17.1-1987 and later editions andA17.3, lighting must be of uniform intensity and notcontrast materially with the surrounding area.For escalators installed under A17.1-1955 through1971, the minimum intensity was 2 ftc (22 Ix). A17.1-1979 required step tread lighting to be uniformthroughout the run and the lighting intensity to bein accordance with local codes and ordinances forstairways. For escalators installed under A17.1-1987and later editions and A17.3, the minimum intensityof 5 ftc (54 ix) is required. For escalators installedunder the A17.1-1977 and later editions, verify thatgreen demarcation lights are present below the stepsat both landings and are on when the escalator isin operation.

1.5,3 Acceptance
Check whether the light level is adequate anduniform by placing a light meter on the steps andread it while the escalator is operating. Take carenot to cast a body shadow on the meter. Notewhether the lighting level on the escalator contrastsmaterially with that of the surrounding area by visualobservation.

ITEM 1.6CAUTION SIGNS
1.6.1 Routine
For escalators installed under A17.1-1981 and latereditions and escalators which are required to complywith A17.3, verify that the required caution signs arelocated at both landings.For escalators installed under A17.1-1993 and latereditions, verify that any additional signs are locatedat least 10 ft (3.05 m) horizontally from the end ofthe newels and that they do not impede traffic orotherwise cause persons to stop.
