ASME A17.1:2004 pdf download Supplement to ASME A17.1 – 2004 Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators
2.1.1.5 Strength of Enclosure. The hoistway enclosure adjacent to a landing opening shall be of sufficientstrength to maintain, in true lateral alignment, thehoistway entrances. Operating mechanisms and lockingdevices shall be supported by the building wall, if loadbearing, or by other building structure. Adequate consideration shall be given to pressure exerted on hoistwaenclosures as a result of windage and elevator operation.
2.1.2 Construction at Top and Bottom of theHoistway
2.1.2.1 Construction at Top of the Hoistway. The topof the hoistway shall be enclosed as required by thebuilding code.
2.1.2.2 Construction at Bottom of Hoistway. Pitsextending to the ground shall have noncombustiblefloors, and shall be designed to prevent entry of grouncwater into the pit. The pit floor of any hoistway notextending to the ground shall be of construction havinga fire-resistance rating at least equal to that required folthe hoistway enclosure. (See also 2.2 and 2.6.)
2.1.2.3 Strength of Pit Floor, The pit equipmentbeams, floor, and their supports shall be designed andconstructed to meet the applicable building codcrequirements and to withstand the following loadswithout permanent deformationin the manner in whiclthey occur:
(a) the impact load due to car or counterweight buffelengagement at 125% of the rated speed or 125% of thestriking speed where reduced stroke buffers are used(see 8.2.3)
(b) the part of the load transmitted due to the application of the car safety, or where applicable, the counterweight safety
(c) compensation up-pull load where compensationtie-down is applied (see 2.17.17)
(d) the loads imposed by a driving machine whereapplicable (see 2.9)(e) any other elevator-related loads that are transmitted to the pit floor
2.1.3 Floor Over Hoistways
2.1.3.1 General Requirements
2.1.3.1.1 A metal or concrete floor shall be provided at the top of the hoistway(a) where a machine room or control room is locatecabove the hoistway
(b) below overhead sheaves and other equipment thatare located over the hoistway and means of access conforming to 2.7.6.3.3 are not provided (c) below governors that are located over the hoistwayand means of access conforming to 2.7.6.3.4 are not prowided
2.1.3.1.2 Floors are not required below secondaryand deflecting sheaves of traction-type machines locatedover the hoistway.
2.1.3.2 Strength of Floor. Overhead floors shall becapable of sustaining a concentrated load of 1 000 N(225 1b) on any 2 000 mm~ (3 in.) area, and in addition, where it constitutes the floor of the main or secondarylevel machinery space, it shall be designed for a liveload of not less than 6 kPa (125 1b/ft) in all open areas.Where the elevator driving machine is to be supportedsolely by the machine room floor slab, the floor slabshall be designed in accordance with 2.9.4 and 2.9.5.
2.1.3.3 Construction of Floors, Floors shall be of concrete or metal construction with or without perforationsMetal floors shall conform to the following:(a) If of bar-type grating, the openings between barsshall reject a ball 20 mm (0.8 in.) in diameter.(b) If of perforated sheet metal or of fabricated openwork construction, the openings shall reject a ball 25 mm(1 in) in diameter.
2.1.3.4 Area to Be Covered by Floor. Where a floorover a hoistway is required by 2.1.3.1, the floor shallextend over the entire area of the hoistway where thecross-sectional area is 10 m2 (108 ft) or less. Where thecross-sectional area is greater, the floor shall extend notless than 600 mm (24 in) beyond the general contourof the machine or sheaves or other equipment, and tothe entrance to the machinery space at or above the levelof that floor Where the floor does not cover the entirehorizontal area of the hoistway, the open or exposedsides shall be provided with a standard railing conform-ing to 2.10.2.
