3 DEFINITIONS
For the purpose of this Standard the definitions in AS 2047 and those below apply.
3.1 Barrier A physical structure that blocks or impedes a child from falling through a window.
3.2 Children A boy or girl five years old and younger.
3.3 Competent Having the necessary ability, knowledge or skill of being capable of performing a task successfully.
3.4 Opening control devices Hardware or fixings attached to the window frame for the purpose of restricting window openings.
3.5 Qualified Having the appropriate competency and ability to perform a specified task.
3.6 Resistant Opposing force that does not result in damage or dislodgment.
3.7 Secure Fixed or fastened so as not to give way during the applied loads.
3.8 Specimen Test specimen that is representative of the largest size of item to be tested.
3.9 Sphere For the purposes of this test, the long force test object may be substituted for the sphere.
3.10 Support frame A structural system that supports other components of a physical construction.
3.11 Window frame That part of a window assembly surrounding the sashes or fixed glazing.
4 IERFORMANCE TESTING REQUIREMENT
Testing shall be carried out using either method:
(a) Type testing (as set out in Clause 7.2 or 7.3) Type testing shall be carried out by a testing authority accredited by signatories to the International Laboratory Accreditation Corporation (ILAC) through their Mutual Recognition Agreement (MRA) to ISO/IEC 17025 or ISO/IEC 17020. NOTE: In Australia, an ILAC MRA signatory is the National Association of Testing Authorities (NATA).
(b) On-sire resting For a window barrier or opening control device that is installed on site and has not undergone type testing, compliance as outlined in Item (a) shall be as follows:
(I) Tested by a suitably competent or qualified person applying the method of Clause 7.2 to the largest fall prevention barrier. The test results shall apply to all smaller size barriers of the same type, and fitted with the same fixing method; or
(ii) Tested by a suitably competent or qualified person applying the method of Clause 7.3 to the largest size window fitted with a window control device (restrictor). The test results shall apply to all smaller size windows with the same device, and fitted with the same fixing method.Windows supplied as complete sets with grilles and tested (without failure) in accordance with AS 5041 are not required to be tested to this Standard. They shall be deemed as a ‘pass’.
5 TEST SPECIMEN
The test specimen. including components, shall be representative both in size and shape of either—
(a) the largest standard assembly of the product type; or
(b) the largest assembly to be used on the specific building project.
Product type is a designation used to distinguish between the method of operation of the window, as well as associated materials and components, e.g. awning, casement, sliding, etc. Dated copies of technical drawings and any other relevant information, such as installation details, shall be made available to the test laboratory prior to the installation of the test specimen. This documentation shall include the following:
(i) Assembly drawing showing elevations and sections of test specimen.
(ii) Details uniquely identifying all parts comprising the window system, including all weather-seals, gaskets, joint sealants and hardware.
(iii) Details of the mounting and fixing of the test specimen.
(iv) A statement certifying that these documents accurately represent the test specimen in all respects.
Fall protection shall be installed and secured as specified in the installation instruction. Details of the mounting and fixing of the test specimen shall be noted on the respective drawing.
NOTE: It should be ensured that the installation instructions include details of the recommended fixings and installation techniques that provide for support equal to or greater than the attachment fixings and installation techniques used to meet the test requirements.
Window control devices shall be installed and fixed as specified in the manufacturer’s instructions. The device shall be restricted to the intended openable size and supplied in a closed position.
The support frame shall be capable of accommodating the full height and width of the test specimen and of supporting its weight and the applied test forces without appreciable deformation of the individual supports or of the frame as a whole.
The complete test specimen shall be attached to the support frame in a manner equivalent to the way the window is installed in a building, such that the attachment devices do not impede the path of the test instrument. If required, sash components may be temporarily removed for test instrument access. The specimen shall be positioned such that application of the force gauge pressure plate replicates the intended conditions.AS 5203 pdf download.
