ANSI NEIS-505-2010 pdf download Installing and Maintaining High Mast, Roadway and Area Lighting
4.1 Coordination
a) Examine areas and conditions under which poles, luminaires, equipment, and components are to be installed. Locate water, sewer, telephone, fire alarm, traffic signal, power lines, and other underground utilities before excavating, trenching, and directional boring.
b) Check the clearance between proposed poles and existing overhead utilities, such as power lines, tele- phone lines, guy wires, etc., before beginning work. Take necessary precautions to prevent contact with overhead lines.
c) Coordinate with the electric utilitywhen required for new services. Coordinate the location ofthe utility connection and provide raceways, meter cabinets, con- ductors, etc., when required for utilityconnections.
d) Schedule the relocation, reconstruction, or other improvements to existing roadway lighting to maintain illumination during hours ofdarkness, or provide temporary lighting, ifnecessary.
e) Establish a staging area, such as a clear portion of a parking lot, driveway, or service yard near the intended installation location, for pole assembly and staging. Use materials such as plywood, wallboard, or the cardboard in which the material was shipped to protect materials, and provide sufficient lumber or railroad ties, to support the poles during assembly. Take precautions to prevent discoloring or other damage to poles and luminaires caused by stains, fin- ishes, or treatments on the support materials.
f) Notify the general contractor, engineer, or owner in writing ofadverse conditions. Do not proceed with the installation until adverse conditions have been resolved.
4.2 Locating Equipment
a) Locate poles and equipment in accordance with contract documents, approved shop drawings, and manufacturer recommendations, and to maintain the minimum required lighting levels. Verify all project dimensions on site.
b) Adjust pole and equipment locations to maintain required clearances and to avoid obstructions, undesirable foundation conditions, etc. Obtain approval for field changes to pole locations prior to construc- tion. Consider obstructions, trees, buildings, fences, roadways, traffic barriers, guardrails, etc., in determining final locations.
c) Locate foundations and bases with a minimum horizontal clearance of3.0 m (10 ft) to storm sewers or other underground installations that might affect stability.
d) Set poles back from street curbs in accordance with contract documents. In the absence ofrequire- ments, set back approximately 900 mm (3 ft) from street curb and where locations are a minimum haz- ard to vehicular traffic.
e) Locate pathway and sidewalk lighting such that lumiaire tops do not overhang streets, sidewalks, or pathways, and are clear ofpedestrian traffic and snow removal, mowing, and cultivating activities.
