1.0 SCOPE This standard provides a method for the packaging of axial/radial components, (diodes, transistors, resistors,capacitors, etc.) in blister packages, tubes, vials, and trays, etc.

3.0 REQUREMENTS
3.1 GENERAL
3.1.1 Requirements of General Packaging Standard NAS 850 are part of this standard except as noted herein.
3.1.2 Requirements of Field Force, Protection for Standard NAS 853 are part of this standard as noted herein. Items which may be damaged by Field Forces (eleetrostatic electromagnetic effects) in a non-operating environment, shall be provided with an appropriate protection by the individual package or thru a lead shorting device applied to the item.
3.1.3 Except for prefor med leads, all lead wires shall extend outward, be maintained in a straight configuration within the item’s proected outside diameter. No bends whatsoever shall be permitted within a distance equal to three times the diameter of any lead from the point of lead entry into the device.
3.1.4
Terminals or other projections shall be protected by means of the design of the container. Leads may be used for posltoning, but must not be subjected to loads or stresses that can damage them or their entry seals.
3.1.5 Usage of inserts or devices within the unit package to maintain item position and requir ed lead configuration is optonal unless required. Material shall be sturdy enough to protect critical portions and not collapse or move out of position. This protection shall consist of cnemically neutral-linit-free type mater ial removable and replaceable as required.
CAUTION: AVOID EXCESSIVE LOADS, COMPRESSION OR BENDING ON LEADS WHEN UTILIZING DEVICES,CUSHIONING, ETC.
3.1. 6 Tape or other sealing material when used shall not contact either the item or its leads.
3.1.7
All items shall be uniformly oriented within the unit packages so that distinctive markings are aligned.
3.1.8 Unlt package design shall incorpor ate provisions that permit safe and easy removal and replacement of the item ithout bending of leads, damage of the unit package or contents. Design shall allow replacement without addition of any adhesives, tapes, devices, etc., or use of quipment.
3.1.9 .
Multiple package design shall be limited to 15 inches in length and shall Incorporate either a “breakaway” or “eutaway” capability for each unit permitting individual dispensing.
3.1.10 Design may include provisions for testing without removal of the item.
3.2 UNIT PACKING
3.2.1 The quantity per unit package shall be as follows, unless otherwise specifled by the procur ement document:

Items shall be packaged in one of type unit packages described herein:
EXCEPTIONS: For items exceeding the following dimensions: body diameter – 1/2 inch, body length – 2 inches,overall item length – 8 inches, the unit package material requirements are waived. However,mater lals used shall not cause commodity deter ioration.
