1 .0 SCOPE: This standard provides a method for the packaging of hose and hose assemblies.
2.0 REFERENCES
2.1 NAS380, General Packaging Standard.
3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.1 General
3.1 .1 Requirements of General Packaging Standard NAS850 are part of this standard except as noted herein.
3.1 .2 Packaging and packing of hose and hose assemblies in straight lengths is preferred. Hose and hose assemblies may be coiled when necessary for reduction of package volume, ease of handling and distribution of packed weight.
3.1 .3 Minimum coil diameter and uniform configuration shall be observed whenever it is necessary to coil hose or hose assemblies. Kinking shall not be permitted under any circumstances.
3.1 .4 Special preformed lengths shall be packaged and packed to ensure retention of their configuration.
3.1 .5 No coil shall have an inside diameter of less than one foot for each inch of inside diameter of hose (e.g., a three-inch ID hose shall have a coil diameter of 36 inches minimum). Minimum inside coil diameter for flexible metal hose shall be 24 inches regardless of hose ID.
3.1 .6 Couplings, fittings, etc., shall conform to the configuration and shall not be forced into the void space.
3.1 .7 Coiled flexible metal hose and/or assemblies with blue dyken stripes shall be maintained in uniform layers without twisting.
3.2 Unit Packaging
3.2.1 The quantity per unit package shall be as follows, unless otherwise specified by the procurement document: One (1 ) each (length, type or size).
3.2.2 Coiled hose shall be adequately secured by blocking, bracing, cushioning, affixing to core spools, and/or by placing tape or strapping equally spaced around the circumference of the coil to ensure that the configuration of the coiled layers is maintained. Spools and reels (wood, steel or fiber) are acceptable if their drum diameters meet the minimum coil diameter (bend radius) requirements and if they will accommodate the bulk and weight of the item. Steel strapping shall not be used. The flanges of any spool or reel shall extend beyond the coiled unit.
