It is shown that neither Hertz’s line contact theory nor his point contact theory are entirely adequate for
the accurate calculation of contact stresses in gear teeth. A numerical procedure is described, which can
be used to find the contact stress in cases where the relative curvatures in the contact region are not
constant.
