ANSI EIA 364-51A-2002 pdf download Ice Resistance Test Procedure for Electrical Connectors
1 Introduction
1.1 Scope
This standard establishes test methods to determine the ability of mated electrical connectors to resist the effects of ice build-up due to water splashing or brief immersion in water, where water is free to drain off of the connector surfaces.
2 Test resources
2.1 Equipment
2.1.1 Chamber capable of maintaining the specified temperature within 5 C.
2.1.2 Vessel of sufficient size to immerse the specimen in water.
3 Test specimen
3.1 Description
A test specimen shall consist of a mated connector, a pair of contacts such as a pin and a socket, mating hermaphroditic contacts, or a printed pad and its mating contacts.
3.2 Preparation
The test specimen shall be prepared and mounted as specified in the referencing document.
4 Test procedure
The referencing document shall specify if there is any pretesting of specimen, and whether components are to be operated during testing.
4.1 The assembled, mated connectors shall be immersed in distilled or deionized water, at standard atmospheric conditions, for one minute; and then placed in a chamber maintained at an ambient of – 55 C 5 C for one hour. A minimum of three such cycles shall be performed until the connector surfaces are completely iced over.
4.3 Immediately after removal from the last cycle, at the low ambient conditions, the frozen connectors shall be uncoupled using connector pliers or a strap wrench and then recoupled.
4.4 Upon completion of the test, the specimen shall be examined for evidence of deterioration and shall meet the electrical and mechanical requirements specified in the referencing document. If electrical measurements are required, the test specimen shall be allowed to rest at room ambient conditions until all ice has melted and all residual moisture has evaporated. If desired, test specimen may be blown dry with unheated compressed air.
5 Details to be specified
The following details shall be specified in the referencing document:
5.1 Test specimen preparation, including mounting and wiring
5.2 Number of specimens to be tested
5.3 Preconditioning, if required
5.4 Initial measurements and requirements
5.5 Final measurements and requirements
6 Test documentation
Documentation shall contain the details specified in clause 5, with any exceptions, and the following:
6.1 Title of test
6.2 Specimen description, including fixturing
6.3 Test equipment used, and date of last and next calibration
6.4 Test and procedure
6.5 Initial and final measurements
6.6 Name of operator and date of test
