IEEE 99-2007 pdf download IEEE Recommended Practice for the Preparation of Test Procedures for the Thermal Evaluation of Insulation Systems for Electrical Equipment
1.Overview
1.1 Scope
This recommended practice provides criteria for the preparation of test procedures for accelerated thermalaging of insulation systems and for the specification of tests based on conditions of use. The objective ofthese test procedures is to provide for the functional evaluation, by test, of insulation systems for electricalequipment. The evaluation of insulating materials and simple combinations thereof is provided for by a
separate material test guideIEEE Std 98TM-2002
For a detailed discussion of the principles on which this recommended practice and IEEE Std 98-2002 arebased, see IEEE Std 1TM-2000. Tests based on IEEE Std 98-2002 may be considered as preliminary testsfor insulation system evaluation, but should not be used as accepted tests for the classification of systems.
1.2 Purpose
This recommended practice provides a general form for the preparation of test procedures and suggests thepoints to be considered by technical committees in the preparation of specific instructions for the thermaevaluation of insulation systems for equipment.
The thermal evaluation of an insulation system involves the following thermal factors of influence:
a) Exposure temperature
b) Ambient temperature
c)Temperature gradient
d) Rate of temperature change

3.Definitions
For the purposes of this recommended practice, the following terms and definitions apply. TheAuthoritative Dictionary of IEEE Standards (B31, should be referenced for terms not defined in thisclause.
3.1 accepted test: A test on a system or model syste that simulates the thermal aging occurring in serviceand correlates with service experience.
3.2 diagnostic tests: Tests that are applied to determine if thermal degradation has occurred, but inthemselves should cause little, if any, degradation.
3.3 experience: Successful operation for a long time under actual operating conditions of the equipment, designed with temperature rise at or near the temperature rating limit.
3.4 insulation system: An assembly of insulating materials in a particular type, and sometimes size, ofequipment.
3.5 specimen life (insulation system): Specified at the test temperature, is the total test temperatureexposure time minus one half of the exposure time of the cycle during which failure occurred.
