10SCOPE
This standard provides a method for packaging delicate units (such as repafrable and non-repairable electronic andoptical units) in containers that are capable of being recycled for reuse.

3.0 REQUIREMENTS
3.7Genera]
Requirements of General Packaging Standard NAS 850 are a part of this standard except as noted herein.3,1,13.1.2 ATA Specification No. 300 Category I and Il containers meet the requirements for containers designatedin this standard as Type I or Type II,respectively.
Type I – Long life reusable container (capable of being re-cycled approximately 100 times).
Type II – Short life reusable container (capable of being re-cycled 10 times).
Selection of container types shall be limited to those described in this standard, The type ofcontainer required will be specified in the purchase order or contract.
3.1,3Containers shall be assembled with all permanent container components secured to the contafner topreclude loss. When the ld is a separate component, it shall be attached to the container withhinges and a limit strap shal1 be provided
3.1.4Containers shal1 be equipped with dunnage capable of protecting the item from shock and vibrationincident to handling and transportation, Cushioning dunnage shall effectively protect the unitthroughout the recycle lifespan of the container.Cushioning systems may consist of resilient foam,rubber shock mounts or mechanica] shock devices .
3,1.5The unit shall be wrapped or bagged in transparent film or protective barrier system when specifiedMhen unit requires static field force protection, the requirements of NAS 853 shal1 take precedencefor material selection.
Latches shall be secured by the use of security wire with lead seal or other essentially similar
3.1.6device to prevent accidental opening or tampering.
3.1.7Container must be capable of withstanding a one hour water spray test per ASTM Designation -95)without evidence of water entry and deterioration that would render the container unserviceable.Water-tight closure seal requirements will be specified in the purchase order or contract.
3.2.1Type I – Reusable Containers
Containers may be constructed of metal, plastic or laminates of wood or plastic with handles andalatches.
Unless otherwise specified, container configuration and size shall be determined from commercially 6available stock sizes. The stock size providing the least required cube shall be used. Forspecial sizes, the modular panel configuration should be used whenever practical.
