AIA/NAS 1514-2011 pdf download RADIOGRAPHIC STANDARD FOR CLASSIFICATION OF FUSION WELD DISCONTINUITIES
SCOPE
This specification defines and establishes the allowable limits for discontinuities in fusion welded ioints asdetermined by radiographic inspection. The specification is applicable to fusion welds in all materials .001 inches to
8.0 inches thick.
REFERENCED SPECIFICATIONS AND DOCUMENTS
The following Specifications form a part of this standard.
ASTM E1742Standard Practice for Radiographic ExaminationAWS A3.0M/A3.0Standard Welding Terms and Definitions
REQUIREMENTS
Weld Classification. The distinction between classes is based upon a measurable allowable quantity for each type oidiscontinuity for each class of weld. In general, five (5) classes of welds having gradations of soundness from ClassI with the fewest discontinuities to Class V with the greatest amount of discontinuities are defined as follows:
ClassIHighest weld quality practical to produce in production. (lt is anticipated that this weld be producedby mechanized means but not restricted to this method.)
Class IlAn intermediate weld quality between Class I and Class Ill.
Class IllA weld quality capable of being consistently produced manually by a competent qualified weldingoperator knowing the requirements and provided with the necessary equipment, fixtures, materialsetc.
Class IVAn intermediate weld quality between Class Ill and Class V.
Class VLowest weld quality for which use of radiographic inspection is normally justified.
The designation of the required weld classification shall be used to indicate the standard of soundness required ineach area to be inspected radiographically.
Determination of Acceptability
Single Type Discontinuity. When the radiograph shows but one type of discontinuity and the discontinuity is equal toor of less magnitude than the applicable class, the weldment or increment thereof shall be considered acceptable.
More than One Type of Discontinuity. When the radiograph shows more than one type of discontinuity, thefollowing procedure shall be used in determining acceptability.
Governing External Discontinuity. When one type of external discontinuity predominates and the other types areequal to or of less magnitude than an acceptable condition for the applicable standard, the predominatingdiscontinuity shall govern without regard to the other types of discontinuities present.
